Los lugares tipicos mas importantes de Constitucion son: la Piedra de la Iglesia, el Penon de Calabocillos, la Piedra de los Enamorados y la Piedra del Elefante. La zona donde se encuentra la ciudad fue antes de la llegada de los espanoles un lugar de pesca y refugio de los indigenas changos y mapuches. Hubieron muchos intentos por establecer un poblado permanente en la zona, en 1791 se establecio una propuesta oficial a cargo de Santiago Onederra. En 1793, el gobernador de Chile Ambrosio O’Higgins autoriza la fundacion de la villa bajo el nombre de Nueva Bilbao. En 1828, se le rebautiza con el nombre actual en honor a la Constitucion de 1828 que se estrenaba en ese entonces. [pic] El Fundador [pic] Henry Mac Iver (1815 – 1877), el fundador de la familia de ese apellido en Chile, fue un marino de origen escoces, que por azar llego a al costa de Valparaiso, durante 1835 debido a un naufragio. Mac Iver se quedo en Chile recuperandose de su accidente y en 1847 se le otorga la nacionalidad chilena, lo que le permitiria comprar varias 37 embarcaciones a lo largo de su vida. En 1841 conocio a Leonor Rodriguez (1819 – 1887) y el 2 de febrero de de 1843 se casa con ella. Ese mismo Henry comienza la construccion de la que seria â€Å"La Casa Mac Iver†. El 15 de Julio de 1844 nace su primogenito, Enrique Mac Iver, luego lo hace su segunda hija Flora Mac Iver el 20 de junio de 1846. Despues nacerian 6 hijos mas. Al fallecer, su viuda, Leonor, lo reemplazaria en la cabeza de la familia hasta su muerte por colera en 1887. Ambos estan sepultados en el cementerio de Constitucion [pic] Enrique Mac Iver [pic] El primogenito de Henry Mac Iver , capitan escoces, Enrique Mac Iver Rodriguez (Constitucion, 15 de Julio de 1844 – Santiago, 21 de Agosto de 1922), quinto dueno de la casa, fue quien refacciono y amplio decididamente. Este hombre se destacaria a lo largo de su vida como importante abogado y destacado congresista por 46 anos, alcanzando lo mas altos puestos como politico: diputado, senador, ministro del estado y pre-candidato presidencial en dos ocasiones. Ademas seria Gran Mestre de la Masoneria Chilena (1887-1894), debiendo decretar que la masoneria descansara mientras duro la guerra civil de 1891, para evitar que la grave contienda se infiltrara en ella. Quizas una de sus actuaciones publicas mas importantes se encuentre en su firme papel de opositor a la presidencia de Jose Manuel Balmaceda. Contrajo matrimonio con Emma Ovalle Gutierrez, con quien tuvo descendencia. Historia de la casa La propiedad en un principio estuvo constituida por un pedazo de terreno con tres frentes exclusivamente: el principal (hacia Bulnes), el lateral por la calle Prieto, y hacia el sur, por la calle O`Higgins. Este terreno fue la parte original (Patio del Medio), el patio del cuidador y el sector bodegas, hoy Patio de los Crespones, junto a una arboleda en la parte trasera de la casa. De manera simultanea Henry Mac Iver comenzo a edificar en un terreno aledano (Bulnes esquina Prieto) una casa que dejaria para renta, hoy el Patio del Nispero. Al fallecimiento de su mujer Leonor, se llevo a cabo el remate de la casa junto con otras propiedades. La casa se dividio entre los hijos del matrimonio. Enrique, Leonor y David se quedaron con la casa y sus otros hermanos fueron compensados con otras propiedades en el mismo pueblo. Habia otras construcciones senoriales importantes alrededor, que ya no existen, cuando Constitucion era un rico balneario de la alta sociedad talquina. Las propiedades que valian, se botaron. Actualmente, la familia organiza sus visitas repartiendose los tres patios que articulan la casa: el del medio (que es el original), el del Nispero y el de los Crespones, que se unieron al nucleo central hacia 1904. Los 40 dormitorios y 16 banos que los rodean estan asignados a cada una de las ramas Mac Iver, y si bien no todas las piezas estan en el mismo estado de conservacion, hay algunas que se han recuperado. Todos los muebles, rincones y habitaciones hablan de una historia familiar que se renueva cada vez que vuelven. Antes era febrero el mes de apertura oficial de sus puertas y nadie iba durante el ano. Hoy, con casi cien â€Å"huespedes† habituales, la casa da la bienvenida desde septiembre y cierra sus salones en Semana Santa [pic] 27 de Febrero de 2010 El sismo del 27 de Febrero es considerado como el segundo mas fuerte en la historia del pais y uno de los cinco mas fuertes registrados por la humanidad. El terremoto ocurrio a las 03:34 a. m, tuvo una magnitud de 8,8. El epicentro fue en el mar frente a Curanipe y Cobquecura a 150 kilometros de Concepcion. El sismo tuvo una duracion de 2 minutos 45 segundos. Las zonas mas afectadas por el terremoto fueron las regiones de Valparaiso, Metropolitana de Santiago, O’Higgins, Maule, Biobio y La Araucania. En las regiones del Maule y el Biobio, el terremoto alcanzo una intensidad de IX en la escala de Mercalli, devastando gran parte de ciudades como Constitucion, Concepcion, Cobquecura y el puerto de Talcahuano. Los muertos ascendieron a una cantidad de 521. Hay alrededor de medio millon de viviendas severamente danadas. Y se estiman 2 millones de damnificados. El terremoto fue la peor tragedia natural vivida en Chile desde 1960. Al terremoto lo siguio un tsunami que destruyo aun mas los pueblos costeros afectados por el movimiento. . Esta masa de agua a gran velocidad golpeo la costa chilena, alcanzando las localidades costeras de las regiones del Maule y el Biobio. En Constitucion, la cifra de muertos fue de 172. Luego de que el impacto del terremoto destruyera gran parte de las viviendas, media hora despues vino la primera de tres olas que entraron a Constitucion, superando los 8 metros cada una. Estas hicieron subir considerablemente el nivel del mar la que se transformo en una pared de agua que entro hasta la Plaza de Armas de la ciudad. Gran parte de los fallecidos corresponden unas doscientas personas que al momento del terremoto estaban acampando en la isla del Maule, ubicada sobre la ribera de este. Las antiguas edificaciones de adobe de Constitucion quedaron totalmente destruidas. Mas de la mitad del casco historico quedo en el piso, incluyendo diversos monumentos historicos y centenarias construcciones de origen colonial. El maremoto que afecto a Constitucion tambien produjo serios danos en las plantas de celulosa de CELCO, por lo que debieron suspenderse las actividades industriales (principal sustento de los maulinos junto a la pesca). Despues de que fue afectada por las 3 olas del tsunami. La casa de los Mac Iver soporto el terremoto, pero se vino abajo luego que el agua que desbordo el Maule. Se midio un metro de agua dentro de la casa. Las paredes de adobe no aguantaron y muchas se vinieron abajo, otras quedaron con serios danos estructurales. Salvar la construccion original de adobe con paja (unica en Chile) es imposible ademas de muy costosa. People decide to move from one place to another for better opportunities, better lives, and new challenges. This remains true for the African American race as well. It has been believed that the original migration took place in 1619 when African Americans arrived to Jamestown, Virginia. However, the first African Americans migrated to the United States almost a century earlier in the 1500’s coming from Mexico and the Caribbean to the Spanish territories of Florida, Texas, and other parts of the South. African-American Migration Experience Though many migrated to the U. S. voluntarily, most African Americans were victims of massive enslavement. War, slave raiding, kidnapping and political religious struggle accounted for the vast majority of Africans deported to the Americas. African Americans were forced into slavery. Many children were kidnapped and sold as slaves. There were those of which who rebelled by refusing to be enslaved that would be expelled from their homes and families then either murdered or forced to be slaves. Slavery developed because the Northern Africans had a monopoly over spices, gold, and other commodities that the Europeans wanted. Europe would send ships back and forth to Africa to trade goods and in the process they were able to grow comfortable with navigating the seas. As a result, Europe was able to develop very good shipbuilding skills that in turn led to the sending of large vessels. That moved the Portuguese to add an additional commodity to their cargo: African men, women, and children. The Portuguese then used African Americans as slaves to work their sugar plantations. Over time English and Dutch ships preyed on the Portugal vessels for slaves, while raiding and looting the African mainland. Slaves were brought to the United States of America during the triangular trade. Ships were built to handle a maximum of 350 people, but Europeans would transport over 800 men, women, and children under some of the harshest conditions. Slaves would be branded, stripped naked during the entire trip, lying down in the midst of filth, all while enduring unbearable heat. All slaves went through frightening, incredibly brutal and dehumanizing experiences. Women and children were raped for the pleasures of the crew. The sick were tossed overboard unto the sea. People who tried to starve themselves to death were forced to eat by the torturing of scolding hot coal pressed onto their bodies. African-American Migration Experience Those who survived the Middle Passage arrived to America only to encounter more grief. They were sent to plantations and farms for agricultural duties. They were used for mining, and placed in towns as servants. In South Carolina and Georgia they grew rice, cotton, and indigo. In Louisiana they slaved over sugarcane plantations. They labored over tobacco farms in Virginia and Maryland. This went on until 1808 when the United States abolished its slave trade from Africa. However, slave trade went on unabated until 1860. In 1898 the boll weevil ate its way through Texas and proceeded to eat its way East across the South. The cotton was destroyed and slaves were thrown off of the land. After WWI there was an economic boom that resulted in the need for agricultural work, but unfortunately most states in the South passed the Jim Crow laws that discriminated against African Americans and led to segregation. African Americans couldn’t attend the same schools as white Americans. They couldn’t use facilities such as restaurants, theaters, hotels, cinemas, and public baths. Public transportation was also segregated and in some states marriage between white and black people. African Americans were at the mercy of landlords, abusive employers, and almost anyone set on depriving them of their rights. This went on until president Franklin D. Roosevelt was forced to issue an executive order mandating the end to racial discrimination. The Fair Employment Practices Committee was created to enforce this mandate, which acted as the launching pad that would bare dividends in the future. Riots erupted in 1943, leading to beatings, deaths, and arrest. African American then resulted to boycotts and sit-ins during the Civil Rights movement. As a result, the Supreme Court reversed the separate but equal doctrine in 1954, ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. There was also the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act that signaled an attack on Jim Crow. The African-American Migration Experience This report reveals the enormous amount of pain, grief, and violence suffered by my ancestors during slavery. I am so appreciative to all those people who marched, boycotted, and endured the pain and suffering so that my children and I could have the freedom to eat in any restaurant, sleep at any hotel, drink water out of any fountain, and go to school to get a good education. I may not be able to relate culturally to the ethnic group that I have written about because I am way too young, but that doesn’t change the fact that I recognize what they fought and stood for and I plan to make sure that my children are taught the history of how African Americans migrated to the United States, and what they went through to get here. Objective The objective of this experiment is to perform a steam distillation using a microscale distillation apparatus and isolate a natural product from cloves. Introduction By performing steam distillation we can isolate eugenol at lower temperature than its usual boiling point of 248 degree Celsius. Eugenol belongs to a category called essential oil. Many of these compounds are used as flavoring and perfumes and in the past were considered the essence of plant from which they were derived. Structure of eugenol (clove oil) and eugenol acetate: Reagents: Eugenol, CH2Cl2, Br2, FeCl3, MethanolProcedure: Co-distillation We first combine 15 mL of water with 1 g of crushed, ground cloves in a 25-mL round-bottom flask. Then added a spin bar to the 25-mL round-bottom flask and assembled the microscale distillation apparatus. We made certain that the ground cloves were well wetted. We maintained the temperature of the sand bath at approximately 130 Â °C and wrapped the bottom of the still with aluminum foil. Then periodically transfer the distillate from the Hickman head to a 15 mL screw cap centrifuge tube and continue the steam distillation until 5–8 mL of distillate have been collected.Then we started the extraction process by adding 2 mL of CH2Cl3 to the water–eugenol emulsion. Cap the tube and shake it frequently. We then allowed the layers to separate and transferred the CH2Cl2–eugenol solution to a clean, dry 5- mL conical vial. We made sure no water was transferred in this step. Then we added 1 mL of CH2Cl2 to the water–eugenol emulsion, cap and shake the tube. Allowed the layers to separate and transfer the CH2Cl2–eugenol solution to the 5-mL vial used previously and made certain that no water is transferred during this step.We then added 1 mL of CH2Cl2 to the water–eugenol emulsion and shook the tube. Our results matched the result we obtained when we compared with control that we had created. FeCl3 test results: Our solution turned light yellowish in color.Control was dark orange in color. He worked hard one his selection were he had to face roger one on one in order to be selected he lost several time but he didn’t give up. His coach inspired him a lot it was him who made him strong, his advice, â€Å"The quality of a man’s life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regard less of his chosen field of endeavor† (page #148).He then started playing game so good that he became star of Readan. He lost his loves one people who he inspires and loves. He lost his grandmother his father’s friend Eugene and his sister. Their death made him upset and depressed his but he still managed to control himself and fulfill his biggest challenge. Life is not easy I believe struggle and challenges are parts of live. No matter who you are what you are life always brings challenges and struggles.Life always brings challenges and struggles but the most important thing is how you accept your challenges and struggle in order to succeed Arnold Sprit Jr. faced challenges and struggles from the day one of his life. In spite of all his problems in his life he managed and survived from all his struggle and challenges. I always knew that no matter what I have to face challenges in life as Arnold did. Many famous people in this world like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther king and Christopher Columbus accepted challenges in life and succeeded.
